We utilized the experience and proven methods of CompTIA's certification exam development. The CompTIA portfolio features 17 credentials, including four ISO 17024-accredited certifications. Examplify uses a validity-centered approach to exam development and follows the best practices outlined by the professional testing community.
Meet Our Leadership Team
Bryan Kainrath, Vice President
Bryan Kainrath is Vice President of Examplify. He is responsible for all facets of the organization and reports directly to the CEO of CompTIA.
Prior to moving into this role, Mr. Kainrath was VP, Products and Operations for CompTIA, responsible for the development and support of CompTIA’s global certifications.
Subsequent to joining CompTIA in 2003, Mr. Kainrath held roles as an operations manager for Morningstar, the mutual fund analysis company, and was a business analyst for Wallace Computer Services.
During his tenure at Morningstar, Mr. Kainrath was responsible for managing the development and maintenance of the proprietary subscriber database system as well as all transactional subscription processing for the organization.
At Wallace, Mr. Kainrath was responsible for reducing costs and was appointed to a CFO sponsored committee to reduce days sales outstanding.
Mr. Kainrath holds an MBA from Northern Illinois University in DeKalb, Illinois and a BA in Business and Economics from Benedictine University in Lisle, Illinois.
Carl Bowman, Senior Manager, Exam Delivery
Carl began working at CompTIA in November 1997. Prior to joining CompTIA, Carl spent time working B2B for a computer reseller in Chicago. In his current role, Carl oversees operations related to CompTIA exam publishing and localization activities and assists with exam security activities. Carl also assists the team with various tasks throughout the exam development phases. He thoroughly enjoys facilitating and assisting in the process of building an entire exam, all the way through launch. He is fascinated with “watching how each phase of the development process births into existence an exam - a defensible method for employers to measure skills and knowledge of their employees.”
Outside of exam development, Carl enjoys playing jazz piano and classical guitar, hiking, rollerblading, taking trips to new places, or hanging out around the campfire with his wife and 5 children. He also dedicates time to playing music at local senior centers on behalf of Homestead Hospice.
Laura Balk, Senior Manager, Exam Development
Laura began working at CompTIA in September 2009 after graduating from the University of Iowa. She is responsible for overseeing the creation and maintenance of the certifications, including the facilitation of item development and cut score workshops both in-house and remotely. Laura enjoys her role on the exam development team because she loves working with people with different interests from all around the world and learning from others.
In her spare time, Laura loves traveling internationally to explore new places, try local food and drink, listen to different music, and emerge herself into a new culture as much as possible.
Danielle Castelli, Manager, Exam Development
Danielle joined CompTIA in June 2014. She manages the certification/assessment development cycle for Examplify clients – from developing the JTA surveys at the beginning of a project, to getting the exam ready to be launched live. Her prior experience includes working as an exam development editor at the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology, and editing and developing textbooks and other educational materials for McGraw-Hill Education. In her current role, Danielle most enjoys training and facilitation during workshops and thinking of new ways to approach development for different Examplify clients.
Outside of work, Danielle enjoys outdoor activities such as hiking with her dogs, boating, and biking. She also enjoys playing the cello, reading and writing, and spending time with friends and family.
Kim Capretta, Specialist, Exam Publishing
Kim began working at CompTIA in August 2011. She is responsible for managing the test publishing process and coordinating all publishing activities for English and translated exams with the test service providers. She also designs graphics for test questions. Prior to joining the exam development team, Kim worked as a copy editor for the veterinary research journals published by the American Veterinary Medical Association. Her favorite aspects of her current job include the creative outlet of designing graphics, and working in the database to analyze and manipulate information, particularly when it involves problem solving or thinking outside the box to accomplish a task.
In her free time, Kim enjoys horseback riding, skiing, mountain biking, snowshoeing, hiking, and spending time outdoors with her German Shepherd.
Cindy Puziss, Coordinator, Exam Development
Cindy joined the exam development team in November 2013. Her responsibilities include planning and coordinating exam development workshops for all new and existing assessment programs and projects. She locates qualified Subject Matter Experts in a variety of certification areas for remote item writing and development workshop. She also works with board members to ensure every exam remains relevant and challenging. Cindy enjoys meeting and learning from experts in their field of expertise and working to create pertinent and challenging exams that adhere to industry needs. Before joining the exam development team, Cindy worked as a 9th to 11th grade teacher for Literature, Language Arts, and Composition in the city of Chicago.
In her spare time, Cindy enjoys boating, skiing, photography, and cooking.
Krisan Matthews, Editor, Exam Development
Krisan began working on the exam development team in September 2015. Her role includes editing, proofreading, and performing quality control reviews of all exam items. She also conducts research and fact checking to verify exam development documents and item content. Krisan really enjoys playing a role in the creation of high-quality exam content by ensuring the items are well written, grammatically correct, and free of any potential errors. Before joining the team, she worked as an editor at a marketing agency in Chicago. Prior to that, she worked at a healthcare association as an editor on their book publishing team.
In her free time, Krisan loves to cook and is always trying new recipes. She also enjoys traveling and spending time with her family.
